To become a movie writer, learn to write in screenplay format and write every day to work on your craft. If possible, earn a BFA or MFA in film studies to learn important screenwriting elements like acting and cinematography. You can also enter contests that offer yearly fellowships and submit your scripts to festivals to get noticed.

Start an outline, but be sure not to include too much, as your story can become convoluted with too many characters and events; your story should focus on a central storyline. Write a draft, set it aside for a week or so to distance yourself from it a bit (so that any errors become more evident to you), review it, and keep editing and polishing it until you're happy with it.

In this (extremely important) step, you focus on the structure of the story. As Wilder said, in order to master screenwriting, you must master STRUCTURE! STRUCTURE! STRUCTURE! Your screenplay’s outline is the first step you should completely focus on creating. You likely will never show this to anyone but your writing partners.

When writing any screenplay, keep in mind that one page equals roughly one minute of screentime. If short films are typically under 50 minutes long, you’ll want a script that’s 50 pages or less. A good rule of thumb: aim to write a 15-page short film and see where that takes you.

While there are different ways to style your treatment, there are a few general steps most writers take. Start with your title. A title should be something that encapsulates the essence of your story. Some titles use the characters (“The 40 Year Old Virgin”), the setting, (“Manchester by the Sea”), or the premise, (“Get Out”).

Your next step in writing a movie is to create a treatment for your idea. A treatment can be thought of as a screenplay for a silent movie—in other words it is a step by step, scene by scene breakdown that describes the action that takes place on the screen but contains no dialogue. Treatments usually run between 10 and 40 pages.
