Ch 3 Create Your Portfolio Writing Schedule 1. Create a writing schedule. You want to write scripts and screenplays, but more than anything you want to write something that will actually be produced. Spending hours on a script that has no clear future seems like a hopeless errand. Great… I have a 110 page story idea that I can show my dog.

A beat sheet is a list a writer makes of the emotional moments, plot points, or 'beats' that outlines and defines their story. Beat sheets give the relative moments that happen in each story. They can also help whittle down which ideas were good loglines but might not have enough to them to sustain an audience for an entire movie, or TV pilot, or whatever you are writing.

Start an outline, but be sure not to include too much, as your story can become convoluted with too many characters and events; your story should focus on a central storyline. Write a draft, set it aside for a week or so to distance yourself from it a bit (so that any errors become more evident to you), review it, and keep editing and polishing it until you're happy with it.

In essence, your treatment needs to be short enough to be snappy and engaging, but long enough to cover all the plot points and sell the story. If you’re writing without a specific audience in mind, then a ten-page document is a sensible length for a film or series treatment.

Writing a screenplay is a huge commitment of time, emotion, and brainpower. It is an investment of creativity and energy. With the first draft finished, the writer is free to turn his attention to other things — for a while. Eventually, with the mind and body recharged, the writer must return to the work and look at it with fresh eyes.

Books and movies both start with a story idea. From there, the process of writing a movie is vastly different from writing a book. Assuming you already have an idea for a movie, your next step should be to carefully craft a logline. The logline is a very brief (25 words or less as made famous in The Player) summary that describes the central conflict of your story, introduces the characters, and hooks the reader. Here are a couple of logline examples—can you tell which movies they describe?

You can dive into writing about how to use QuickBooks and on the side, learn about crypto, then make a switch. The key here is to start getting focused on a few areas where you can succeed early. With all of that said, if you don’t have a specific expertise, it’s 100% ok to start out as a generalist. Step 2: Choose a Freelance Writing Niche

Agents and editors often tell new writers, “Don’t start at the beginning, start in the middle,” which usually means, “Don’t waste pages setting up the core of your story.” Wise advice. Try starting at your knottiest point, and then drive it forward using the same techniques that got your concept there.
