If you like numbers, check out the 2018 Authors Guild Authors Survey. It shows that the median author income for 2018 was $6,080, which is far less than a person can live on. The survey shows that median author income is down 42% from 2017. However, earnings are up among “full time, romance/romantic suspense and self-published authors.”

Self-published authors can make between 40% – 60% royalties on a single book sale while traditionally published authors usually make between 10%-12% royalties. First-time authors who want to traditionally publish can get an advance, which is usually $10,000 (usually not that much more for a first-timer).

Their research found a $6,080 median for all writers, while full-time writers have $20,300 median. The survey speaks to the wide disparities that exist in author salaries. Publishing ends up being a “winner-takes-all” market – a couple of authors at the top make the vast majority of the earnings.

You get it, you say. You still want to know how much the average novelist makes. Very, very, little. No benefits and other costs add up. Your average “midlist” novelist, who has not been picked up by a large publisher makes $4,000 per book—before expenses! Note I said midlist also. Midlist means you have some name recognition.

Meaning that what used to garner a $50,000 advance now garners a $10,000 advance. It is true that the size of the average advance is down, but it’s also true that while rev share deals may pay out nothing upfront, over time the payout can prove quite lucrative.
