Some universal observations on the above. US advances are much higher than Indian advances. Coming off Keep off the Grass’ success, Harper’s $12K (Rs. 6 lakhs) advance for Johnny Gone Down was very high for the Indian market but pales in comparison to the $90K(+$10K for India) advance I received for The Yoga of Max’s Discontent as a debut novelist in the US.

I know I started out doing 120K-ish fantasy novels and am now more typically in the 75K range. I pay about $1,200 for a copy edit on a 100,000-word novel, which my editor typically turns around in five days or so. This is her day job. I am happy to pay her a rate at which she can make a decent living.

To account for this gap, the Authors Guild conducted a massive survey in 2018 to get detailed financial information from more than 5,000 authors. Their research found a $6,080 median for all writers, while full-time writers have $20,300 median. The survey speaks to the wide disparities that exist in author salaries.

Let’s say the average is $8000. Not bad, but not so great either for all the work you’ve put into writing a book. But, you get $8000 plus you don’t need to pay for cover design, editing and marketing (at least that’s what most authors assume, anyway, which is a mistake). So it can appear to be a good deal.

The Oxford English Dictionary recognizes other definitions of novelist, first appearing in the 16th and 17th centuries to refer to either "An innovator (in thought or belief); someone who introduces something new or who favours novelty" or "An inexperienced person; a novice."
