If you know English, French, German, Russian, Italian, Spanish and Portuguese, that's probably enough to keep you busy for the rest of your life, since these languages possess some of the most traditional literary cultures in the West, but you'd be missing out a lot.

France was able to dominate world literature, as they did, because they were in the forefront of all areas of learning and intellectual endeavors — the language of the enlightenment thoughts was French; French medicine and mathematics were the best in the world; French was also the language of international law; french explorers and geographers singlehandedly documented the entire globe.

The literature that'll become available in its original language is a prime factor for me. Thanks in advance…show more. French for sure, German and Russian. You will also find that a lot of uni research/works are translated in French or German, those languages being historically present in terms of culture.

Aside from English, I think Spanish, French, and German are good choices. I'd say Spanish because you get access to the works of an entire continent. I speak English and Spanish fluently, and if I were to learn a third language for literary purposes it would be French.

The literature is astonishingly rich, and it's a treat to read Montaigne, Molière, Balzac, Rimbaud, Éluard and other greats in the original. French pop is pretty awesome, too, and knowing French makes listening to Aznavour, Jacques Brel and MC Solaar that much more fun.
